Argon built a new state-of-the-art marine research facility for the University of Auckland at its campus in Leigh, about 100km northeast of Auckland City.
The facility enables scientists to carry out advanced research into animal and plant physiology, aquaculture, and the impacts of various stressors on ocean life.
The project involved removing the existing seawater system and storage tanks and building a new 300m2 building on the site. This building houses the new holding tanks and associated research spaces.
The research facility continued to operate during construction, and works had to be carefully sequenced to ensure a constant supply of filtered seawater to the research facility at all times.
Due to the site’s location, perched on cliffs above the Goat Island marine reserve, careful environmental management was carried out in collaboration with the University and mana whenua Ngāti Manuhiri.
