Whangārei Hospital Radiation Oncology

This new three-level building is an addition to the existing Jim Carney Cancer Centre at Whangārei Hospital, linked by a bridge on the upper level. The facility provides radiation oncology services for Northland patients and includes state-of-the-art treatment rooms, with two linear accelerator bunkers and a CT scanner room.

The upper level includes the reception, whānau spaces, consultation and waiting rooms, and the middle floor houses the staff work areas. The treatment spaces are on the ground floor, with the linear accelerator bunkers partially underground.

The facility’s interiors include natural materials, soft textures and carefully controlled light and acoustics to create a soothing environment for patients and staff. On the exterior are curved, powder-coated mesh screens.

A wide range of sustainable building materials and construction methods were used on this project, which is targeting a 5‑star Green Star rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council.
